We treat anxiety like itâs a curse.
Something to fix.
To numb.
To push away with more noise, more caffeine, more control.
But hereâs something that changed everything for me:
Anxiety isnât the enemy.
Itâs your nervous system trying to protect you,
using old methods you once needed to survive.
Itâs not weakness.
Itâs memory.
What Is Anxiety â Really?
Psychologically, anxiety is your bodyâs threat response.
It activates when your brain senses dangerâeven if no danger is present.
It might show up as:
- Racing thoughts or heartbeats
- A stomach that twists without reason
- Tight chest or difficulty breathing
- Irritability or overthinking small things
But these arenât random.
They are survival patterns.
Your body remembers.
Even when your mind doesnât.
Trauma, Control, and a Nervous System That Doesnât Feel Safe
For many of us, anxiety comes from a dysregulated nervous system.
Why? Because early in life, we had to be hyper-aware to feel safe.
We learned:
- If I please them, Iâm safe.
- If I control everything, I wonât get hurt.
- If I stay quiet, I wonât be rejected.
This is called hypervigilance.
And itâs common in those with childhood emotional neglect, trauma, or unpredictable environments.
Itâs not your fault.
But it is your opportunity to heal.
What Islam Says About Inner States Like Anxiety
Islam doesnât shame emotion.
It validates it.
Even the Prophet Muhammad ï·ș felt deep grief, fear, and sadness.
But he processed it with Allah â not in isolation.
Allah says:
âIndeed, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.â
(Qurâan 13:28)
Notice He didnât say: “Don’t feel anxious.”
He said: Come back to Me, and I will hold your heart.
The Science of Safety: What Helps Calm Anxiety?
Healing anxiety isnât about forcing calm.
Itâs about creating safety in your body and mind.
Modern psychology shows that regulation, not suppression, is the key.
Here are powerful practices supported by science (and aligned with spirituality):
1. đ« Breathwork with Presence
Slow breathing sends a signal to your brain: We are safe.
Try this:
- Inhale for 4
- Hold for 4
- Exhale for 6
- Whisper âYa Salaamâ (The Source of Peace) on each exhale.
Repeat for 2â5 minutes, especially after Fajr or Maghrib.
2. âđœ Journaling to Your Anxiety
Write directly to your anxiety like itâs a younger part of you.
Ask:
- What are you trying to protect me from?
- What do you need from me right now?
Often, youâll find it doesnât need logicâit needs love.
3. đż Nervous System Grounding (Body + Earth)
Touch something naturalâbarefoot on grass, hand on a tree, or simply feel water.
Allah created these as natural regulators of our fitrah.
As the Prophet ï·ș said:
âThe earth has been made for me a place of prostration and a means of purificationâŠâ
(Sahih Bukhari)
Nature heals. So does sujood.
Reframing: What If Anxiety Is a Gift?
What if anxiety isnât trying to destroy you?
What if itâs showing you where your body doesnât feel safe, so you can bring presence there?
What if itâs calling you closer to your Rabb?
When anxiety comes, say:
âWelcome. Youâre here to teach me where Iâve abandoned myself. But I wonât abandon you anymore.â
Thatâs healing.
Thatâs love.
Thatâs divine connection.
Quick Tips: What to Do When Anxiety Hits
- đ§Drink cold water and breathe deeply
- đ Pray 2 rakaâat of just presenceânot perfection
- đż Recite âHasbunAllahu wa niâmal wakeelâ (Allah is sufficient for me)
- đ¶ Listen to nature sounds or Qurâan recitation
- đ€Č Talk to Allah like youâre a child needing comfort
Final Reflection
You were never meant to carry this all alone.
Anxiety is real, but so is Allahâs mercy.
The goal is not to âfixâ yourselfâitâs to come back home to your soul, gently.
You are safe now.
And if youâre not, you can build that safety, moment by momentâwith breath, with du’a, with compassion.
You are not too sensitive.
You are alive.
